Narrative
The following newspaper cutting dated 1904 is pasted into the G S B bible:
"MRS. G. S. BARTRUM
Mrs. Sara [Sarah ?] Bartrum wife of Mr. G. S. Bartrum, died atRangiora,on February 4. Mr and Mrs Bartrum arrived at Lyttelton in theship Stag, on May 24 1851*. Facilities for travelling were then so scantthat several times Mrs Bartrum had to carry her babies over the PortHills into Lyttelton, from the spot once known as the Christchurch Quay.In those days doctors were almost an unknown quantity, so that MrsBartrum's medical knowledge proved a boon to many settlers. In helpingthose and others ungrudgingly throughout her life, the deceased ladyendeared herself to all her acquaintances. She leaves a husband, ninechildren and thirty-four grandchildren."
*The ship, Stag was known to arrive in 1852. (BRB 28/04/1999)
Sarah Bartrum had a brother, T.W. Pursey who married Sarah Ann Cone.
THIS FROM AN UNDATED NEWSPAPER CLIPPING
"Mrs Pursey, who died suddenly at Rangiora on Sunday morning, was theonly daughter of the late Mr. Cone. She came to New Zealand in 1851 withher father and three brothers in the ship Bangalore. Her father wasaccidently killed twelve months after arrival when bringing goods overthe Port Hills by pack horses. On her marriage to Mr. W. Pursey[sic] shewent to reside at Ashley Bank, and on the death of her husband sheremoved to Rangiora. The deceased lady endeared herself to all who knewher by her unobtrusive kindliness. She leaves two sons and fourdaughters."
In connection with the above, the following death notice is also pastedin the bible:
"PURSEY---On December 28th at her late residence, 262 King street,Rangiora, Sarah Ann, widow of the late T. W. Pursey; aged 75 years."[1919 pencilled on this newspaper cutting]
